Are you an organisation seeking help from volunteers?

Volunteer Bureaux have experience of working together with not-for-profit volunteer using organisations, from those using a few volunteers to those using hundreds. If your organisation is seeking help from volunteers then your local Volunteer Bureau will be able to support your work by:
  • Providing advice and information on issues relating to volunteering.
  • Offering guidance, training and support about recruiting and supporting volunteers
  • Developing and adopting a volunteer policy to promote good practice in volunteering
  • Training for volunteers and developing new volunteering schemes

Your organisation can also benefit from being part of initiatives such as TimeBank and Millennium Volunteers.

As part of our commitment to overcoming barriers to volunteering we include the following in responding to queries from organisations...

REGISTRATION FORM FOR VOLUNTEERING-ENGAGING ORGANISATIONS

Thank you for filling in this form. We will keep the information you have given us at Volunteer Link-up, publish it on-line if you have asked us to and use it to match potential volunteers with appropriate voluntary work.

Do phone us if you want to discuss any points on this form. The following notes may help.

  • In the brief description of the work, please try to be specific about the purpose of the job and the range of activities involved. Volunteers should not be recruited as a substitute for paid staff;
  • You should be adequately insured for all activities volunteers undertake on your behalf;
  • If at all possible out-of-pocket expenses should be reimbursed to volunteers;
  • Any induction programme should provide an introduction to the organisation, its philosophy, as well as the scope of the particular opportunity
  • The training of volunteers is the responsibility of the volunteer-using organisation.
    (Do contact us is there is any aspect of training that we might be able to help with).
  • Please make it clear to volunteers who they are responsible to and who they can approach for help or support;
Equal Opportunities - please make sure that you are aware of the full implications of an equal opportunities policy which should include:
  • Race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
  • Sex, marital status or caring responsibility
  • Sexuality
  • Age
  • Physical or mental disability or mental health
  • Political belief or religion
  • Class
  • HIV status
  • Employment status
  • Unrelated criminal conviction
The Importance of Equal Opportunities
Volunteer Link-Up want to make sure that Equal Opportunities is taken to mean that volunteering is open to anyone regardless of race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin; gender, marital status or caring responsibility; sexuality; age; physical or mental disability or mental health; political belief or religion; socio-economic status; HIV status; employment status or unrelated criminal conviction.

We want all organisations who use volunteers to understand the meaning of equal opportunities and to examine their motives for recruiting volunteers to assist their organisation.

Sometimes this will mean that a specific support system will have to be put in place in order that a certain volunteer is enabled to carry out tasks required of them.

Obviously, appropriate tasks need to found for anyone with certain disabilities.

The main reason for equal opportunities, and policies relating to them, is to ensure that every effort is made to give everyone the opportunity to give their services to the community through volunteering should they wish to do so.
